MORE Music Recommends...Kids Of 88
By Dane Anderson
Sugarpills from Kids of 88 has been one of the most anticipated albums to come from New Zealand.
A lot of hype and mystery surrounded Kids of 88 ever since their romp stomping song “My House” hit NZ radio charts back in 2008. The elusiveness came from the fact the band didn’t give many interviews at first, rather letting the music speak for itself – which it most certainly did with the follow up hit “Just A Little Bit”, and their most recent single “Downtown”.
Consisting of Jordan Arts and Sam McCarthy, the Auckland based band characterize their music as "a cross between a late 80s police drama intro theme and a sophisticated super hussy". With sleazy bass-lines and mind-numbingly catchy hooks, Kids of 88 are all about poking tongues and making sweaty suggestive innuendos.
It’s hard to pick favourite songs when all of them stand out. ‘Downtown’ is the perfect song to get ready to go town to, and ‘Apart From You’ just has that exciting new wave feel where you can easily get lost in the moment.
If you’re a child of the 80’s you’ll also notice the references to the TV show Full House in the song ‘San Fran’ - “I can play Uncle Jessie, you can play Mary Kate”
The album has been described as "good-time party music”, and if you don’t find yourself at least tapping along to the beats, you might need to get your ears checked.
Already Kids of 88 have been the support act for US band Passion Pit, and have been nominated for two Vodafone NZ Music Awards.
You will love this band. You will love this CD.
