DIFFERENT THINKING CALENDAR 'SEXY BACKS'
Unlike most others, the Autism New Zealand calendar runs from 1 June 2010 to 31 May 2011 and features the photography of Wanganui based photographer, James Price whose youngest child, Tyler, was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 4.
The concept has been called “Sexy Backs” and sets out to produce simple Black & White portraits, showing naked backs, something we all have, something that is cheeky, fun, and where sex, age, race, or autism is irrelevant.
Although Autism affects over 40,000 people in New Zealand and the number of diagnosed cases is increasing at an alarming rate throughout the world, it is still a condition that people often don’t like to talk about or face up to. It was decided to highlight that issue by asking people to be photographed turning their backs for Autism and the idea for the calendar was born.
James approached Autism New Zealand in 2009 and offered to gift them the photographs in order to raise awareness and much needed funds.
Alison Molloy, Chief Executive of Autism New Zealand said that she was moved by the generosity of the offer and the quality of the photos. “Using them to produce a calendar seemed like the obvious choice and it has been very hard to decide on a final 12 to publish because all of the images are stunning. James’ skill and personal connection with the cause shows through in the quality and emotion of every photo.”
The calendar is being launched in Wanganui on Tuesday 13 April, in time for Autism New Zealand’s Appeal Week at the beginning of June and there are already plans in place for next year’s calendar.
