The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have officially welcomed their third child into the world - and they've revealed it's a boy.

A statement from Kensington Palace revealed Princess Kate delivered their new son, weighing 8lbs 7oz, at 11:01am on Monday morning.

While his name is not yet known, the infant is Prince William and Princess Kate's third child together, joining Prince George, four, and two-year-old Princess Charlotte in the Royal Family.

The new child is fifth in line to the throne, behind father Prince William, grandfather Prince Charles, and his older siblings.

Princess Kate was taken to the Lindo wing of St Mary's Hospital in central London at about 6am on Monday morning (local time), after suffering her first labour pains.

She gave birth five hours later.

Hordes of journalists and monarchists lined the streets around the hospital after Kensington Palace revealed she had gone into labour.

Princess Kate gave birth to Prince George in 2013 and to his sister Princess Charlotte in 2015. Both children were also born in St Mary's Hospital.

The 36-year-old announced her most recent pregnancy in September 2017.
