Supporting people with mental illness can be difficult. But one boyfriend has done what he can to make his significant other feel better, even if he's not around to console her.
Reddit user bodaveez was inspired by other creative jars online to create something that will provide some emotional support to his girlfriend whenever she needs, filling a jar of affirmations.
Each stick is colour-coded to fit in one of four categories – quotes, reminders, things to help her relax and a set of blank sticks on which she can write about things that make her happy.
"Each “category” is colour-coded so, for example, orange is inspirational quotes from poets, political figures, philosophers, and humanitarians across time," he wrote online.
"Yellow reminders are positive words to help her through the day things like “‘you’re beautiful” and “it’s ok to ask for help”, the purple ones are tips to help her relax things like “take a break” while she’s working on her masters or “listen to your favourite song”.
"I put a fine tipped sharpie in there with the blank ones so she can record moments when she’s the happiest and then she can pull one of those later when she needs it."
Living with someone that completely shuts down from both of these problems, I’m trying to see if it’ll help.
"She sometimes gets so caught in what she’s doing, she becomes overwhelmed and doesn’t even realise it. I’m hoping that this will help her even a little."
"She’s very special to me…[the] least I can do is try to help.I’m sure there are plenty of guys like me around. Our relationship has been the most challenging of my life but also the most enjoyable."
