A pint of beer or a glass of wine a day can help you live a longer life, according to research.
The study found indulging in a glass each night will protect your heart and cut your risk of early death by 25 per cent, especially in cardiovascular disease.
Drinking 14 units or less per week for men, or seven for women, was linked to a 13% reduced risk of “all-cause mortality” in men and a 34% lower risk in women.
However, like anything in moderation, the American College of Cardiology researchers warned heavier drinking is linked to greater health problems, negating any benefits.
"Our research shows that light-to-moderate drinking might have some protective effects against cardiovascular disease, while heavy drinking can lead to death," the study's lead author, Bo Xi, said.
"A delicate balance exists between the beneficial and detrimental effects of alcohol consumption, which should be stressed to consumers and patients."
