Ed Sheeran fans were surprised, excited (and some slightly heartbroken) that the singer announced he had secretly engaged to his girlfriend of two years just before the end of 2017.

But, other than Ed’s closest friends, very few were aware how Cherry came into Ed’s life at just the right moment.

The pair first met while at school together at Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham, Suffolk, where Ed had a bit of a crush on her.

They went their separate ways, with Ed dropping out of school at 16 to pursue music, and Cherry crossing to America to Duke University in North Carolina, where she studied molecular biology.

But when Ed took a year out from music and social media in 2015, he hit his lowest point.

In a recent interview Ed said he even locked himself away in his London home for four months as he struggled to come to terms with his enormous celebrity status.

"I watched movies. I couldn’t just go out and get a pint of milk. I always wanted to maintain normality. I was ordering takeaways and putting on a lot of weight," he admitted in an interview.

Ed then used his gained wealth to travel the world for fun, and used the time to reconnect with his roots.

Knowing that Cherry was in America, he reconnected with her, and sources told The Mirror say she was “delighted to hear from her school friend”.

"This has been the first time I’ve ever actually had the time to fall in love properly. I’ve always got into relationships very passionately — I’m a redhead and also Irish," Ed previously said of the early days of his relationship.

The two then took time to travel through Japan, NZ and Ghana together, before Cherry returned to the UK to move close to Ed.

The couple now live together and live a private life away from the cameras when possible.

Speaking previously on BBC Radio 2, he said: "I'm actually the happiest I've been and it's because I had a year to spend with someone. I've always started relationships then gone off on tour.”

"I spent every day for a year with this certain person, we kind of have a strong relationship now which is good.”

"I'm really secure now, we live together and we have cats, and I think when you have cats that's kind of it."
