A state of emergency has been called in Napier after an enormous amount of rain battered the North Island city on Monday night.
Along with the heavy downpour, locals also experienced strong winds and thunderstorms.
Official advice from Hawke's Bay Emergency Management is to "shelter at home and avoid driving where possible."
"If you feel unsafe at home, self-evacuate to family and friends first. If you need urgent help because you are in danger, call 111."
