Crowdfunding websites such as GoFundMe, GiveALittle and a whole load of others have done some seriously good work for people in need. But a man crowdfunding to buy his girlfriend an engagement ring has drawn criticism online.
The man is chasing just over $20,000 (NZD) and has currently raised $609 in a bit over a week. He says that he came up with the idea after his fiance got him 30 presents for his 30th birthday. ‘I need a more innovative way to show my appreciation while incorporating friends and family,’ he said.
He continued by saying that ‘sometimes we can’t quite afford expensive things by ourselves. A lot of people lean on credit card companies and banks (that overcharge them) so that they appear to do nice things for people they love by themselves.’
'Anything helps. All proceeds will go to the purchase of a beautiful engagement ring one that WE ALL can be proud of. Call me crazy but Love is Free Not Engagement Rings and Weddings.'
The man has been called 'romantic' and 'thoughful' for his efforts, but there has also been some backlash... Some people think that he'd be better off working for the money himself, instead of asking other people to chip in for something so personal.
What do you think, this is an appropriate thing to crowdfund for?
