Severe weather expected to hit New Zealand again

Severe gales and icy conditions are threatening to hit various parts of the country.

Police are urging motorists to take caution around the wider Invercargill area because of ice on the roads from Friday morning.

Trucks and cars have hit ice and skidded off the road near the bridge North Road, Lorneville, they said.

In the lower North Island, the MetService is warning of strong southerlies. The strongest winds are expected in Wellington and coastal parts of Hawke's Bay and Gisborne until Friday night.

Snow on Porters, Lewis and Arthur's Passes in the South Island expected to ease on Friday morning.

Snow showers are expected to affect the Rimutaka Hill road from Friday afternoon to early Saturday morning, and will also affect higher parts of the Desert Road from Friday morning through to evening.

Light snow showers may briefly affect the Dunedin Waitati Highway (State Highway 1) on Friday morning

Threats of heavy rain have passed for Gisborne, Hawke's Bay and Canterbury, but rains on Thursday have caused a few slips in central Wellington.
