Can you spot the face in the Aoraki Mt Cook cliff?

An amateur photographer with a keen eye for detail may have spotted New Zealand's next Mt Rushmore on our tallest mountain.

Christchurch art gallery owner Philip Wynands couldn't believe his eyes when he saw a outline of a human face on the south face of Aoraki/Mount Cook.

Mr Wynand snapped the picture on April 6 on the Kea Point Walk.

Adamant the image isn't Photoshopped, the protruding face reveals more than just rocks and snow - you just need to look closely, he says.

"It's definitely not Photoshopped it's as it is - as you saw it and as I saw it on the day, I took the photograph and that was it.

"When you hear people are climbing the south face - this may be the 'south face'.

"We've been there several times to Mt Cook and never seen that face before, and just to see it that time is just incredible," Mr Wynand says.

"I'm absolutely pleased at how its come out, and just to show people and the look on their face when they cant believe what they are actually looking at."

Mr Wynand's wife Tracey was with him when he took the photo, and agrees she too can see the face.

And it appears they aren't just seeing things - the image has been viewed and shared hundreds of times on social media, with people making up names for the peculiar natural phenomenon.

One person said it was Sir Edmund Hillary himself.

The couple have mounted the large photo hanging it in their gallery alongside other pieces.

No price tag has been put on the image, but it is up for sale.
