Beloved '90s cartoon Rugrats is set to return to TV screens with 26 new episodes, nearly 30 years after it first premiered.

Tommy, Chuckie and the rest of the gang will also be rendered as CGI characters for a live-action movie as part of the re-launch of the franchise.

Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures teased that alongside the original squad, audiences will also be introduced to a new cast of characters in the upcoming projects.

"Rugrats is hands-down one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history, and we are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures," said Sarah Levy, interim president of Nickelodeon.

"What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: kids are fascinated with the world of babies."

The feature film, which will place the famous babies in a real-world setting, is set to hit screens in 2020.

Paramount spokesperson Brian Robbins said he anticipates the movie will bridge generational gaps.

"Kids who grew up with Tommy Pickles and the Rugrats crew will now be able to share that experience with their own children."

The Rugrats join a nostalgic line-up of classic series that will be rebooted by Nickelodeon including Blue's CluesRocko's Modern Life and Invader Zim.
