A woman in Bangladesh gave birth twice nearly a month apart due to an undiagnosed condition that left her with two uteruses.

The woman gave birth to a boy in late February, and twins in March Dr Sheila Poddar, a gynaecologist at Ad-Din hospital in Dhaka told CNN.

Dr Poddar said the woman's first birth went as normal, with no abnormalities noticed. But she was admitted to hospital again less than four weeks later complaining of lower abdominal pain.

It was then doctors realised she had a second uterus and was pregnant with twins. Dr Poddar performed a C-section and the twins were born healthy.

A second uterus, known as uterus didelphys is a rare condition, and the occurrence of a twin gestation has the odds of one in a million.

Twin gestation going unnoticed until birth is uncommon, but not unheard of.

"From rural areas, people don't know what is wrong with them. They don't know how many children they are pregnant with and sometimes whether they are pregnant also," Dr SN Basu, from Max Healthcare hospital in New Delhi told CNN.

The mother did not have an ultrasound before her first delivery, which is why it was missed, Dr Poddar said.
