First we received the list of most popular Kiwi baby names for 2021. Now we've got the ones that didn't make the cut!
A list of 78 baby names rejected by the Ministry of Internal Affairs has been revealed, with royal titles being the main reason a name was rejected by the Registrar-General.
King, Saint, Royal and Prince (alongside their various alternate spellings) were some of the more popular rejections.
But we really have to raise an eyebrow that two babies almost had the name III, while another child was almost called Commodore. That poor child.
Tips for ensuring you can register your baby's name:
- avoid official titles, numeric characters or anything unpronounceable, like a backslash or a punctuation mark
- rethink swear words
- limit the name to no more than 70 characters.
- register the baby's birth using the SmartStart website. It's the quickest and easiest way to register a birth.
