Sometimes, when the world feels a bit scary (looking at you, the last two years) it's nice to indulge in a bit of nostalgia and take a trip down memory lane to a simpler time: childhood.
There are some things that are just quintessential to the experience of being a Kiwi kid - burning your feet on hot sand, having a jandal blowout on mufti day - but growing up in the 90s in Aotearoa brought with it a very specific and special set of experiences.
Here are some of the things all 90s Kiwi kids will remember:
The excitement of a trip to the video store on a Friday night
The suspense of having the film from your camera developed, only to find your finger was over the lens for 90% of the photos
Being given the all-important job of putting the song lyrics up on the overhead projector at the school assembly
Splashing out on a 50c lolly bag, or just getting a couple of 5c lollies if you were skint that week
The all-you-can-eat buffet at Pizza Hut, especially the dessert section
The sound of chatter rings and the joy of finally getting all the rings going at once
The pain and regret of neglecting your Tamagotchi until it died
Getting yelled at by your parents for hogging the phone line while browsing the net
Making poi out of plastic bags at school
Dubbing a mixtape from the radio and having to press record and play at the exact right time
Eating chip and marmite sandwiches
Birthday parties at Georgie Pie, Lollipops Playland or McDonald's
Sprinting home after school so you didn't miss the latest episode of Pokémon
Choreographing dance routines with your cousins/siblings/friends to Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, Hanson, the Spice Girls, Robbie Williams and Aqua
