These jewellery-cleaning hacks use tomato sauce, beer, shampoo and more

How can something that causes so many stains in our homes be so useful for cleaning?!

It might sound strange to use T-sauce as a cleaning product, considering how often it appears in grubby fingerprints on our couches - but it's apparently great at buffing up jewellery.

In fact, it turns out there are a bunch of things you probably have in the cupboards at home that will give your tired necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings a new sparkle.

UK jewellery experts Ingle and Rhode have put together a list of viral TikTok jewellery cleaning hacks that feature household products like baking soda, tin film beer and more.

Tomato sauce: You can immerse a piece of jewellery in a bowl of tomato ketchup for a few minutes and it will give it a new lease of life. Don’t leave silver in tomato sauce for a long time though. Rinse, dry and polish for a super shine.

Light-coloured beer: Put some beer onto a soft cloth and rub the metal, then allow to dry - note: Not for use on gemstones.

Tin foil: Promotes the chemical process called ion exchange. Line a bowl with foil, fill it with hot water and mix a tablespoon of bleach-free laundry detergent. Soak the jewellery for a minute and allow it to air dry.

Mild shampoo: Delicate shampoo such as baby shampoo can give pearls, turquoise and opals back their shine. Just mix some of the shampoo with warm water and use a soft brush such as a make-up brush and polish each item in turn. Do not soak the jewellery, though.

Vodka: Some gemstones can benefit from being treated in vodka. You can put a ring in vodka for just a few moments, clean and dry and check out the sparkle.

Baking soda: Create a paste of baking soda and water and apply to silver with a sponge, before rubbing and buffing for a smooth finish. Only use this hack on silver and gold - not gemstones themselves.
