One of the most beloved and highest selling Australian artists of all time, has been diagnosed with cancer.

John Farnham, the ‘You’re The Voice’ singer, has been admitted to hospital and will soon undertake surgery and treatment for a cancerous growth, his family announced in a statement.

In the statement, the 73-year-old says he’s thankful he’s able to be treated on by the best healthcare professionals in the business, but it does not disclose more information about his diagnosis.

“Cancer diagnosis is something that so many people face every single day, and countless others have walked this path before me,” the statement reads.

“The only thing I know for sure is that we have the best specialist healthcare professionals in Victoria, and we can all be grateful for that. I know I am.”

He is the only Aussie artist to hold a number one record in five consecutive decades; ‘Saide (The Cleaning Lady)’ in 1967; ‘Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head’ in 1970; ‘Age of Reason’ in 1988; ‘Chain Reaction’ and ‘Then Again’ in 1990 and 1993; and ‘The Last Time’ in 2002.

The 1967 single ‘Sadie (The Cleaning Lady)’ set him on the road to stardom in Australia, as it sold over 180,000 copies, making it the biggest selling single in Australia at the time.

His 1986 album ‘Whispering Jack’ which contains his smash hit ‘You’re the Voice’ reached number two on the New Zealand charts, and has gone 24x Platinum in Australia.

It is the highest-selling album in Australia by an Australian artist, having sold 1.68 million copies, and also spent 25 weeks at the #1 spot.
