Labour simulator - Can Adam handle contractions

We put Adam through an inTENSce test
21 November 2023 4:50PM

Adam and his wife, Eve, are just days away from welcoming their second bundle of joy into the world.

With Eve now at 39 weeks, the rest of The Breakfast Club decided to give Adam a sneak peek into the world of contractions.

The weapon of choice? A TENS machine, short for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, is usually designed for pain relief using a mild electrical current. But when we ramp the charge up, it can mimic the sensation of labour contractions.

Speedy, the designated torturer... I mean facilitator, strapped the contraption onto Adam's back. But Adam had his first complaint before the machine even hummed to life. The pads were apparently 'too cold,' making him jump. If he thought that was uncomfortable, he had much more in store...

As the TENS machine got dialled up, Adam's initial discomfort escalated into full-blown convulsions and gasps. Even on the lower settings, the poor guy couldn't hold his composure, collapsing onto the couch at level six before Speedy had to turn off the device before reaching level eight.

Of course, there's no way to do justice to the full spectrum of surprises that come with actual labour.

Thanks to Cath and the team at Styx River Farm for loaning us their TENS Machine - if you want to chat to them about using one yourself, click here to check out their website.
