Enchanted World
Saturday 13 June to Sunday 16th August
Created uniquely for Auckland Art Gallery, the exhibition presents exquisite paintings on scrolls and golden screens of the pleasures of life in the ‘Floating World’.
Discover shogun-ruled Japan with its beautiful courtesans and entertainments, as well as iconic landmarks from snow-capped Mount Fuji to blossoming cherry trees, and the imaginary realms of dragons and fantastic beings.
Through delicate silk paintings, precious scrolls, folding screens and vibrant woodblock prints, travel to ancient Edo (Tokyo) and celebrate the characters, places and pastimes of a flourishing era during Japan’s 250 years of self-imposed isolation from the world. Drawn from private art collections across Japan, Enchanted Worlds includes work by the legendary master artists Hokusai and Hiroshige
While there, don’t miss digital artworks from celebrated contemporary Japanese artist Tabaimo and renowned international art collective teamLab.
