Kiwi singer Lorde has missed out on winning Album of the Year at the Grammys, with Melodrama losing to 24k Magic by Bruno Mars.

It was the only category the singer was nominated for and she was the only nominee reportedly not offered a solo performance at the ceremony.

Melodrama was Lorde's second album, and featured songs such as 'Green Light' and 'Home Made Dynamite'.

Since the release of Melodrama, Lorde has won a Silver Scroll award and six New Zealand Music awards.

The album has been nominated for a Teens Choice award, a UK Music Video award and a BBC Music award.

The Album of the Year win is Mars' 11th Grammy for his third album.

Childish Gambino, Jay Z and Kendrick Lamar were all also nominated in the category.

Fellow Kiwi Brooke Fraser was successful in another category, taking home a Grammy for Best Christian Performance.

Opetaia Foa'i also attended the New York awards ceremony, nominated for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, but his movie Moana lost out to La La Land.
