Superstar DJ Avicii has died, after years of battling health problems.

The 28-year-old Swede, real name Tim Bergling, retired from performing live in 2016 after suffering acute pancreatitis and having his gall bladder and appendix removed.

He was found dead in Muscat, Oman on Friday afternoon (local time), his representative said in a statement.

"The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given."

His debut single as Avicii was released in 2007, and he made it big with such songs like 'Wake Me Up' and 'These Nights'.

During his career Bergling worked with dance star David Guetta, guitarist Carlos Santana, singer Aloe Blacc and rock band Coldplay.

"Devastating news about Avicii," fellow dance producer Calvin Harris wrote on Twitter.

"A beautiful soul, passionate and extremely talented with so much more to do. My heart goes out to his family. God bless you Tim."

It's reported Bergling had an alcohol problem, which may have contributed to his health issues.
