Countdown supermarket set to roll out 'bring your own containers' nationwide

NZ 29/07/2019

Supermarket chain Countdown will now allow customers to bring their own containers for over-the-counter food in stores nationwide.

The move follows a successful trial across 18 stores in the deli, meat and seafood counters.

Countdown spokeswoman Kiri Hannifin said the feedback from the BYO trial was "overwhelmingly positive".

"We know Kiwis are passionate about reducing single-use plastic," she said.

The chain moved to phase out plastic bags last year. Single-use plastic bags have now been banned by the Government.

"Food safety is our absolute priority and, while BYO containers can slow service down a little while the team gets up to speed with the new process, on the whole our customers have been very supportive and know that this is a good change to make," Hannifin said.
