The UK's Captain Sir Tom Moore has sadly passed away after a battle with COVID-19.

In 2020 Sir Tom managed to raise more than 6.6 million NZD for the National Health Service by walking laps of his back garden - he became a national treasue in the process.

After the huge support shown towards Tom by the British public, he was given a knighthood by the Queen.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear father, Captain Sir Tom Moore," his family said in a statement.

"The last year of our father's life was nothing short of remarkable. He was rejuvenated and experienced things he’d only ever dreamed of.

"Whilst he'd been in so many hearts for just a short time, he was an incredible father and grandfather, and he will stay alive in our hearts forever."
