Mexican President has ignited a social media frenzy by posting a photo of what he believes is an elf-like creature hiding in a tree.

President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, shared the photo on his social media accounts, claiming it to be that of a mythological creature known as an ‘alux’, a mischievous spirit from Yucatán folklore.

In the photo, you can see a dark tree containing the silhouette of an elf-like creature staring back at the camera. Sources have said that branches appear to be creating the illusion of hair, while the stars behind the tree could be creating the creature's eyes.

López Obrador has spoken out after sharing the photo, giving the impression he’s not joking and adding  “everything is mystical”.

The photo itself was taken by an engineer three days prior to when the President posted the photo on Saturday.

Aluxes, according to traditional Maya mythology, are small, mischievous creatures that live in forests and fields and are known to play tricks on people by hiding items.

These small creatures are said to be appeased by leaving small offerings.
