The highly anticipated official trailer for The Barbie Movie has dropped, showing Barbie finding problems in her safe plastic home and venturing into the real world.

Barbie and Ken played by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, leave the perfectly pink, positive paradise of Barbieland to encounter ridicule, cat calls, teenagers and jail of the real world. While there, there is also the angry real-world executive, played by Will Farrell, who is intent on keeping Barbie's appearance in the real world a secret.

The trailer also features the newest single from Dua Lipa, who appears in the movie soundtrack as well as in the ensemble cast as mermaid Barbie.

Ironically, Margot Robbie recently revealed that she never owned her own Barbie doll growing up.

Talking to Vogue magazine, the Aussie actress shared that her only encounters with Barbie were when she visited relatives.

“I know my cousin had a bunch of Barbies, and I’d go to her house,” she said. But Margot was never interested as acting as the iconic doll until she was well involved in the project.

“It wasn’t that I ever wanted to play Barbie, or dreamt of being Barbie, or anything like that,” she said.

“We of course would want to honour the 60-year legacy that this brand has, but we have to acknowledge that there are a lot of people who aren’t fans of Barbie."

“And in fact, aren’t just indifferent to Barbie. They actively hate Barbie. And have a real issue with Barbie. We need to find a way to acknowledge that,” she said.

The Barbie Movie is set for release in New Zealand cinemas 21 July.
