Close friends and family gathered at Matthew Perry’s funeral on Saturday to lay the late actor to rest.
As they farewelled Matthew, a song played that had a powerful impact on the 'Friends' star, leaving everyone in tears.
The song was Peter Gabriel's timeless 1986 track, 'Don't Give Up,' featuring Kate Bush, which Matthew had chosen as "the soundtrack" to his memoir when he was promoting his book.
The lyrics struck deeply, with verses that read: "Don’t give up, 'cause you have friends, don't give up, you're not the only one, don’t give up, no reason to be ashamed, don't give up, you still have us."
It was a fitting tribute to a man who had left a lasting impact on so many.
In one of his final interviews, Matthew spoke candidly about the significance of this song in his life.
Talking on ‘Q With Tom Power’ in November 2022, just under a year before his passing, Matthew opened up about the song's special place in his heart.
When asked what the soundtrack to his memoir 'Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing' would be, Matthew replied without hesitation.
"'Don't Give Up' by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush." He encouraged everyone to listen to the beautiful song, which had a message he held close to his heart.
"They are saying 'Don't give up,' I mean come on, how am I not going to like that? But the music video of that was just them hugging each other and the camera just went around until the song ended. It was so cool and I loved that,” he told Tom.
“I've been writing when I've signed the book, I always put 'Don't give up' there because you shouldn't give up.”
At his funeral, some of Matthew's most cherished pals and co-stars from ‘Friends’, including Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow, Matt Le Blanc, and Courteney Cox, were in attendance.
The cast released a touching joint statement last week following the loss of their long-time friend.
"We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family," their statement to People reads.
"THERE IS SO MUCH TO SAY, BUT RIGHT NOW WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A MOMENT TO GRIEVE AND PROCESS THIS UNFATHOMABLE LOSS."
They continued, "In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty's family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world."
