Wellington coffee shops shocked at being left off 'vibiest' coffee spot world rankings

“No one does a flat white like New Zealand"

Coffee shops around Aotearoa’s capital city have been left with a bitter taste in their mouths (not from a long black) after not making it onto a list of the world’s "vibiest" coffee shops.

Not one single coffee shop in Wellington managed to make the cut on Colombian coffee company Tambia’s ranking of the ‘Top 50 destinations to drink coffee around the world'.

Tamibia ranked cities around the world using TikTok, TripAdvisor and Instagram data “to find the vibiest locations where people were drinking coffee, where the most beautiful places were to sip on a cup of coffee, and how many coffee houses and cafes were in each location.”

Representatives for coffee shops in Wellington were, quite frankly, gobsmacked at their city being omitted from the list, after all, the popular flat white was invented in Welly (though a few other cities also make the claim).

One coffee spot reckons the US having so many spots on the list, including New York’s Felix Roasting Company, is appalling.

“No one does a flat white like New Zealand,” someone from One People’s Coffee diner told Newshub. “The Americans, we just had to give up when we visited, you had to order a cappuccino so it had any kind of froth on it.”

Another barista said the coffee in Europe is “actually quite s**t”.

Tate Burge, the owner of Wellington’s Swimsuit Coffee, believes little old NZ didn’t even cross the rankers’ minds.

“They might have literally just forgotten, maybe even thought that we were in Australia or something... I just don't think they've been to Wellington before, aye?".

Tambia heard the backlash and have since added a note to the article.

They explain Welly’s been left off the list “not for lack of amazing coffee, vibrant coffee shops or skilled baristas”, but because Kiwis are not sharing their fav spots on social media enough. At the end of the message though, they hint that an NZ coffee ranking might be on the way!
