Two of New Zealand's favourite ice cream flavours are back after disappearing for nearly a year.
On October 17th, Tip Top’s Goody Goody Gum Drops and Cookies and Cream tubs will be back in Kiwi supermarket freezers after they were discontinued in October last year. BUT, the tubs will be smaller this time around.
The returning flavours are part of Tip Top’s ‘Crave’ range, which means they’ll be available in 1.2L tubs. Before they were pulled off shelves in 2022, you could buy them in 2L tubs.
Stuff reports that the Crave range flavours cost between $8.50 - $10.29 at supermarkets while standard 2L tubs cost between $5.50 - $8.30.
So, they’re back, just in smaller containers and at a higher price.
Someone pointed this out on Tip Top’s Facebook post announcing the news. The company replied, saying that “rising ingredient costs made it tough for us to keep those flavours viable - quality matters to us, so we had to make the tough choice to bring it back in our Crave tubs.”
Ingredients being more expensive is why the flavours were discontinued in the first place.
“Due to significant cost pressures relating to these items, we could not continue these two flavours in the 2L format without sacrificing the quality of our ice cream,” Tip Top said on a FB post at the time.
Ben Schurr, the top dog at Tip Top, said they’ve been putting in the mahi to bring back the flavours.
“Removing these two flavours from supermarket freezers last year wasn’t a decision we took lightly and after the reaction from disappointed Kiwis across the country, we knew we had to find a way to bring them back,” he said.
“We started working on a new format almost straight away, under our 1.2L Crave range, considering the economic viability of bringing back the flavours, while ensuring the quality of the product.”
I think it sucks they won’t be available in 2L tubs, but my stomach, gut, and all the other things destroyed when I eat a whole tub in one sitting, will be happy.
