Kiwi TikToker says her 'captain' rule with her fiancé is a game-changer for avoiding arguments

Who's the captain in your relationship?

One Kiwi TikToker swears by what she calls the 'captain' rule, claiming it's the game-changing secret to keeping her relationship smooth sailing.

Cassidy Skelton took to TikTok to share she and her fiancé Nick’s genius idea helps them from getting overwhelmed and frustrated with one another.

According to Cassidy, they've divided their life into different areas, and each area has its own ‘captain’. Whoever's the captain gets to call the shots, while the other just goes with the flow.

For example, Nick takes the reigns when it comes to dealing with their landlord because he's the ‘captain’ of their tenancy. Meanwhile, Cassidy is in charge of the finances.

“We do this because he is better at communicating with landlords - it stresses me out when I do it. I’m better at finances, so I do that," she said.

They’ve even extended the ‘captain’ rule to parenting, where the captain gets to take the lead with their son.

“Whoever the captain is at the time, has [our son] on us,” Cassidy explained.

Being a former flight attendant, Cassidy says she takes charge when they're travelling through airports. This means she will be the one carrying their son because she is the most in control of that situation.

“I’m the most calm parent, therefore he will be the most calm baby on me.”

One of the perks, Cassidy adds, is that it prevents arguments over who's in charge. They've got their roles set in stone, so if the captain becomes "bossy and orders the other around", it’s already been established that it’s not out of frustration.

“If [Nick] tells me that something needs to be done for the house because of the landlord, I’ll be like, ‘yeah, of course! You’re the captain’.”

So, what do you think? Could ‘the captain’ rule be the answer to the frustrating tiffs in your own relationship? It's definitely one worth giving a try!
