A recent study from PLOS Biology claims to have found the 'magic number' of coffees you should have a day in order to maximise certain health benefits.
The researchers say that they believe their studies show a relation between drinking 4 cups of coffee a day and a decrease in heart related health issues.
"Our results indicate a new mode of action for caffeine, one that promotes protection and repair of heart muscle through the action of mitochondrial p27."
"These results should lead to better strategies for protecting heart muscle from damage, including consideration of coffee consumption or caffeine as an additional dietary factor..." They added some of the positive effects displayed more in the elderly.
"Furthermore, enhancing mitochondrial p27 could serve as a potential therapeutic strategy not only in cardiovascular diseases but also in improving healthspan."
Other researchers have expressed interest in the study, but emphasise that this shouldn't be taken as an excuse to start drastically increasing your caffeine intake.
