Unfortunately, one influencer from the UK learnt the hard lesson that sometimes an act of kindness isn’t always met with a positive response.
Amelia Goldsmith is an influencer from London who has gone viral on TikTok for her failed attempt at doing a good deed.
Her idea was to pay for a stranger's food at a Sainsbury's grocery shop. Sounds nice, right? Well, unfortunately, things didn't go as planned, and poor Amelia ended up in tears as she shared her horror story with the camera.
In her video, which has now been viewed over 1.2 million times, Amelia explains that she just wanted to "do something nice." She was nervous about approaching someone, hoping they wouldn't think she was a "weirdo."
Amelia tried a few times to pay for someone's food, but everyone declined her offer. One person even told her, "No, no, no. I really don't need it." Eek.
After multiple failed attempts, Amelia bought a basket full of pasta and pasta sauces to donate to a food bank instead.
She spoke to the camera outside the supermarket, feeling “embarrassed and judged”.
"THAT WAS REALLY STRESSFUL. I WAS EXPECTING THE FIRST PERSON TO BE OVERJOYED AND GRATEFUL AND HAPPY FOR ME TO PAY FOR THEIR SHOPPING, BUT OBVIOUSLY, THAT DIDN'T GO DOWN WELL."
Amelia started crying, explaining that she was taken back by the “angry” and “stern” shopper who declined her offer.
Honestly, I wouldn’t say no to a free shop, but I can see why others may get offended.
As one commenter pointed out: “The filming probably put them off, and they would think, ‘Oh, do I look like I'm poor?’"
Another told Amelia that she probably should have chosen a less well-off area of London.
"SUCH A LOVELY GESTURE. BUT ADVICE WOULD BE NOT TO GO TO BALHAM WHERE MOST PEOPLE LIVE IN £1M+ HOUSES."
Sadly, Amelia's good intentions didn't work out, but she shouldn’t take it too rough.
Doing something nice for someone else, even a stranger, is a selfless act that deserves recognition.
