People are putting Woolworths 'no tears' onions to the test and the results will shock you

Forget wearing your kids' pool goggles to protect your eyes.

Everyone knows the pain of those horrid onion-induced tears, but now there may be a better solution than wearing your kids' pool goggles or leaving a damp paper towel nearby to protect your eyes.

Woolworths over in Australia are now selling Happy Chop - Tearless Onions!

These onions are claimed to be less irritating to your eyes, so you won’t cry like you've just watched ‘The Notebook’ for the first time.

So how do they work?

Well, normal onions irritate our eyes because they release certain natural chemicals and enzymes that irritate our eyes when we cut into them.

According to German Plant Breeder Rick Watson, The new Happy Chop - Tearless Onions have fewer of these tear-inducing compounds, and the chemicals continue to diminish after they're harvested.

Don't believe it? Check out @xoeandgabe on TikTok giving the new onion variety a go. She admits that onions are her weakness in the kitchen, but to her absolute shock, not a single tear left her eyes as she chopped away.

She was even brave enough to put the sliced vege right up to her lookers.

Another curious TikToker put the onions to the test. He said: "I'm leaning in to try and see the effect, and wow, I felt nothing. Magic!

You might be wondering, "What's the catch?" Well, these tearless wonders do come with a twist – their taste. Some folks have mentioned that they have a milder and sweeter flavour compared to your regular brown onions. But hey, we've got to give them credit for sparing us the tears, right?

Woolworths' Fruit and Veg General Manager, Paul Turner, expressed his excitement about bringing this game-changing variety to their customers.

He told Daily Mail: “Onions are a household staple, and this is a great option for many people who end up in tears when preparing onions.”

'I've heard all sorts of stories about how people avoid tears when cutting onions - whether that's wearing glasses, freezing onions or wearing a mask,” he added.

"'We're excited to bring this incredible variety to our customers to take the tears out of meal prep.”

The vege is currently exclusively available at Woolworths stores across New South Wales, however, we’re hoping with Countdown stores around New Zealand rebranding back to Woolworths, we too might be able to get our hands on the revolutionary onions.
