Legendary singer Tina Turner, best known for iconic songs like 'Proud Mary' and 'Simply The Best', has died at the age of 83 after a long illness, her publicist has said.

Tina had been ill in recent times, after being diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016 and having a kidney transplant in 2017.

"There will be a private funeral ceremony attended by close friends and family," Her publicist said in a statement. "Please respect the privacy of her family at this difficult time."

The singer, born Anna Mae Bullock in 1939, was living in Switzerland with her long-time German love, music executive Erwin Bach. The pair had been living together in Switzerland since 1994, and married since 2013.

She was often referred to as the Queen of Rock and Roll, who won eight Grammy Awards in her lifetime and has a star on both the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Her autobiography, 'I, Tina', was turned into the 1993 film 'What’s Love Got To Do With It', dramatising the mother-of-two’s famously turbulent relationship with musician Ike Turner. Actress Angela Bassett was nominated for an Oscar for her performance as Tina in the biopic.

Tina is survived by her two adult sons and her husband.
