From light shows to silent discos: 5 things to do with the kids at Elemental AKL festival 2023

...and a couple things to do for a date night without them.

Aucklanders in every part of the city will have the chance to experience something unique at Elemental AKL festival. Starting on the 20th of July, basically every suburb in the city will have something going fun going on nearby. There are dining experiences, incredible music, and even awe-inducing art installations. 

If you wanna get the kids out of the house and show them something they've never seen before, check out these recommendations!

Cool events to take the little ones along to this month

Takapuna Winter Lights
Thursday 27 July – Sunday 30 July from 5 – 10 PM

Take the whole family to Takapuna and enjoy beautiful, illuminated installations along Hurstmere Road and Hurstmere Green each evening. With live music and performances accompanying the lights, it will be a full sensory experience for all.

Silent Disco Fan Walks
Thursday 20 July – Wednesday 2 August

Celebrate women’s football with a brand-new immersive audio adventure as you walk through the CBD! Pop on your headphones, enter a world of your own and be amazed as public spaces are transformed into dance floors, strangers become performers and more.

Row Tundra
20 July – 6 August every 30 minutes between 10 – 6 pm.

Head up to the sixth floor of Smith & Caughey’s and see ROW, an installation that makes data interactive. Be mesmerised by this dazzling audio-visual experience, which challenges your perception of information and language.

Immersive Audio Hīkoi
Wednesday 28 July, 6 PM

This leisurely evening walk along Takapuna Beach is achievable for all the family, using site-specific audio to connect you with the whenua and unlock the stories it holds.

Dubtastic at Covert Theatre
Friday 21 July – Saturday 5 August, 7:30 PM

See some of the best improvisers in Tāmaki Mākaurau transforming classic black and white films by dubbing over them at Ponsonby’s Covert Theatre. You can be sure the fun is all made up on the spot, because the audience will choose the film at the top of each night.

Takurua – Ti’iti’i Sacred Knowledge
4 – 6 August

This performance combines fine dining, dance and theatre to bring the mythology of Ti’iti’I Atalaga to life. The rebellious trickster challenged the gods to share their sacred knowledge with the people of the Pacific, and his story will be told through the Samoan fale aitu tradition.
