Hear the man behind the mic, Gary & Lana lay it bare in their Long Lunch

From losing loved ones, to relationships, to joining the show 18 years ago - Gary and Lana sit down and flick through the pages of ‘Lord Ted’
7 February 2023 7:30PM

Ahead of Gary's final week on The Breakfast Club, he sat down with Lana to chat about the many different aspects of his life.

Set up in a little pub, The Lyttelton Arms, after rattling down the road with her wheelie bag of recording equipment, Lana caught up with Gary in his ‘natural habitat’, where they flipped through Gary’s life and career.

"We can sit down here for as long as we want to, and talk about you and your life.”
- Lana

From losing loved ones, and relationships, to joining the show 18 years ago - Lana & Gary cover it all!

Late last year Gary made the announcement on air with The Breakfast Club, that he was stepping back from More FM in 2023 to take on a new venture with sister station Today FM.

Since 2005, the ever-wise 'Lord Ted' brought his opinions, poems, and thoughts to the More FM family, but he never fully expected the lustrous career her ended up seeking.

“When I was originally asked to join More FM I thought to myself, why would I come to Christchurch? I was living in Gisborne at the time and he said, we'll give you an apartment, you can try this early morning radio thing”
- Gary

Throughout their long lunch, Lana and Gary lay out his early years from being the head boy, to his rebel years leaving his law studies behind for the surf.

“I was basically surfing and I've been making the Heartland documentary series."
- Gary

After falling into the right place at the right time, Gary became part of the furniture at More FM, continuing with his 4 am alarms for 18 years.

“I never thought I would be able to stick to one thing because up to that point I'd always moved from writing stuff, performing comedy, touring with rock bands, writing stuff. [...] I never actually thought I would ever last in one job for 18 years.”
- Gary

Gary’s final breakfast at More FM will be this Friday (10th February).
