Chef's easy 5 ingredient flat bread is the perfect thing to make at home

Trying to find bread in supermarkets over the last couple of weeks has been a mission of ridiculously epic proportions. With queues outside grocery stores and even local dairies cleared out of loaves, it hasn't been so easy to make a lunch sandwich while working from home.

If you don't feel like braving the supermarkets, a US chef and baker has shared an easy Native American flatbread recipe he says helped his family through times where there wasn't a lot of money.

"This Navajo flatbread is the easiest kind of bread you can make. Costs pennies and can get you through these strange times," wrote Brandon Johnson.

"My family lived off these when the pickings were slim."

Johnson's flatbread recipe:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 - 1 1/4cup of lukewarm water
  • 1 table spoon baking powder
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon oil/butter/shortening
  1. Mix dry ingredients together and add most water, mix and add water until it has the consistency of tacky pizza dough.
  2. Knead for a few minutes.
  3. Let rest in a greased bowl for 30- 60 minutes.
  4. Divide into 6 pieces and roll out on a floured surface thin (tortilla thickness).
  5. Hear griddle to 350F (180C)
  6. Cook until golden brown spots appearm and flip, cooking until done.
  7. They can be made ahead and kept under a flour towel or frozen for later use.

"Hope this helps!" Johnson finished his post, which has racked up over 190,000 shares and 42,000 likes from impressed home cooks.

The flatbread recipe can be used for any number of uses - to roll around Mexican fillings, or as a naan bread for curries.

It's not the only easy home-recipe using basic ingredients people are sharing in these trying times. Earlier this week, food blogger The Petite Cook shared her magic water cake recipe, perfect for those in lockdown as it only uses six pantry staple ingredients.
